BAND

Awarded to Boys that have regularly attended BGB band practices with good conduct for one session, who have passed a test and who have attained a satisfactory standard of proficiency on their instrument.

It is quite permissible for a Boy to gain more than one of these awards, but to be eligible for a second award he must qualify on the second instrument for a further session. Boys must also fulfil the further conditions as stated for the respective instrument.

BUGLER’S

Awarded to Boys qualify as follows:

Stage 1

1. The Boy must be able to play correctly and in correct timing the tunes listed here

(a) Retreat

(b) Warning for Parade

(c) Fall in for Parade

(d) Orderly Sergeants

(e) First Dinner Call

(f) Second Dinner Call

(g) General Salute

2. Two marches from the BB Bugle Handbook.

3. Be a regular member of a BB band for at least six months

or

be a regular Company bugler in one session.

4. Show knowledge in the care and maintenance of bugle.

Stage 2

Awarded to Boys who hold the Stage 1 and qualify for the following:

1. Play correctly and in correct timing

(a) Last Post

(b) Band Fall-In-Call

(c) Officers’ Call

(d) Reveille

(e) Lights Out

(f) one other additional call from the Handbook other than those mentioned in Stage 1

2. Be able to read and play fundamental music notes from the Bugle Handbook.

3. Be a regular member of a BB band for at least another six months

or

be a Company orderly bugler for another session.

Stage 3

Awarded to Boys who gained the Stage 2 in a previous session and qualify for the following:

1. Read and play at sight at the correct tempo, any bugle music, one phrase in each 2/4, 3/4, 4l4, and 6/8 time.

2. Be a regular member of a BB band for at least a further six months.

DRUMMER’S

Awarded to Boys who qualify as follows

Side Drummers

Stage 1

1. Play correctly

(a) Long Roll (open and closed)

(b) Four five-stroke or four seven-stroke rolls

(c) Paradiddle

(d) Brass or Bugle

Bugle

• beatings for two marches from Handbook

Pipe Bands

• beatings for two marches of their own selection in 2/4 and 6/8 time

2. Be a regular member of a BB band for at least twelve months.

Stage 2

1. Play correctly

(a) Drum parts of three pre-selected band music

(b) Any three selected exercises

(c) Flams and Drags

2. Understand the musical terms.

3. Be a regular member of a BB band for at least a further six months.

Stage 3

1. Read and play at sight at the correct tempo any drum music, one phrase in each of 2/4, 3/4, 4/4 and 6/8 time.

2. Show knowledge in the care and maintenance of drums.

3. Be a regular member of a BB band for at least a further six months.

Bass Drummers or Tenor Drummers

Stage 1

1. Show proficiency and accurate beating of time

(a) at least two tunes each of slow and quick march time

(b) National Anthem

(c) General Salute

2. Be a regular member of a BB band for at least twelve months.

3. Show knowledge in the care and maintenance of drums.

Stage 2

1. Be able to

(a) Flourish the sticks on the march

(b) Play the exercises in the Handbook

2. Understand the musical terms.

3. Be a regular member of a BB band for at least a further six months.

Stage 3

1. Be able to play

(a) Roll notes of more than a crotchet or dotted crotchet duration

(b) Exercises in the Handbook

2. Show knowledge in the care and maintenance of drums.

3. Be a regular member of a BB band for at least a further six months.

PIPER’S

Awarded to Boys who qualify as follows:

Stage 1

1. Play correctly on a bagpipe

(a) All doubling from Low G to High A

(b) Two Quick Marches and a Slow March

2. Be a regular member of a BB band for at least six months.

Stage 2

1. Play correctly each of the following, previously submitted by themselves, in a grouping chosen by the examiner.

(a) Two Quick Marches

(b) Two Strathspeys

(c) Two Reels

2. Answer correctly at least seven out of 10 questions on the theory of music.

3. Play correctly on a bagpipe more advanced movements, i.e. Grips and Taorluaths, as directed by the examiner.

4. Be a regular member of a BB band for at least a further six months.

Stage 3

1. Play correctly each of the following, previously submitted by themselves (these must differ from the tunes submitted in the Stage 2 test) in a grouping chosen by the examiner.

(a) Two Quick Marches

(b) Two Strathapeys

(c) Two Reels

In addition, the examiner will deliberately alter the setting of the brass or tenor drones and the Boys will be required to return the drones before proceeding with the test.

2. Pass an examination of not less than 20 questions on the theory of music and the care and maintenance of the bagpipe.

3. Read and play at sight on a bagpipe on two bars of pipe music in each of 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 6/8 times.

4. Show practical knowledge in the care and maintenance of bagpipes.

5. Be a regular member of a BB band for at least a further six months.

BANDSMAN’S

Awarded to Boys who play instruments other than the drums, bagpipes or bugle and who qualify as follows:

Stage 1

1. Play correctly

(a) Scales C, F, Bb, G and D

(b) Their own part of a march

• at least one quick and one slow march

2. Be a regular member of a BB band for at least twelve months.

Stage 2

1. Show knowledge of elementary theory of music, including comparative values of notes and rests, major key signatures, time signatures, and principal expression marks.

2. Play correctly a piece of their own selection.

3. Read and play at sight a simple tune.

4. Be a regular member of a BB band for at least a further six months.

Stage 3

1. Show knowledge of more advanced theory of music, including tones and semi-tones, relationship between major and minor keys and their key signatures, alternative fingering and elementary harmony.

2. Play correctly a piece of their own selection.

3. Read and play at sight a more difficult tune.

4. Be a regular member of a BB band for at least a further six months.
